Jade McGlynn (Leverhulme Research Fellow in the War Studies department at King’s College London) talks about how civilians living under Russian occupation have formed a decentralised intelligence system – and the risks that come with it. She explores the links between sovereignty, resistance, and trust, from the practical realities of providing targeting information to the dangers of surveillance, detention, and coercion. The discussion also looks at how historic models of resistance have been adapted to today’s digital battlefield, why “democratised” intelligence still needs professional safeguards, and what allies can do to better support those trapped under occupation. The interview, conducted by historian and senior editor Paul Lay, was recorded in October 2025 during the seminar Intelligence and Contemporary Global Challenges.
