On the theme: Virtues and vices

What does it mean to live well, and how have ideas of virtue and vice shaped human behaviour across time? From classical ethics to modern debates about freedom, responsibility, and character, we examine what it means to move toward an ideal – and what happens when we disagree on what that ideal is. Drawing on thinkers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, as well as Christian and modern traditions, the conversation traces how moral thought has evolved. Along the way, we explore questions about the role of community and the individual, the tension between shared norms and moral pluralism, and the challenges posed by modernity. Featuring David Butterfield, Senior Lecturer in Classics Mateusz Stróżyński, Professor of Philosophy Thomas Idergard, Catholic Priest Hans Ruin, Professor of Philosophy Ritchie Robertson, Professor Emeritus Sten Widmalm, Professor of Political Science Jessica Frazier, Lecturer in the Study of Religion Hanno Sauer, Associate Professor of Philosophy On the theme – exploring some of humanity’s biggest questions.
