Shashank Joshi, Defence Editor at The Economist, talks about what a US withdrawal from NATO could mean for Europe – militarily, politically, and strategically. Joshi outlines how Europe’s deterrence still depends on American “enablers” such as intelligence, surveillance, logistics and refuelling, and why replacing that capacity would take years. The interview, conducted by historian and senior editor Paul Lay, was recorded in October 2025 during the seminar Intelligence and Contemporary Global Challenges.
