Philosopher John Cottingham explores the long history of the soul – from its roots in ancient Greece to its decline in modern psychology – and makes the case for why the concept still matters today. Cottingham argues that while modern science has pushed us toward a materialist view of mind and consciousness, this picture fails to capture the full range of human experience: our capacity for value, beauty, meaning, and transcendence.
